Entertainment-Weekly

So we got Coco Sumner, aka Eliot Pauline Styler Sumner, who is the daughter of Sting, aka Gordon Matthew Sumner and this really err, intense, interview with Sting and a way eager reporter named Giselle asking about “Tantric Sex”  and music…yada, yada, but back to her because her music is worthwhile.  I can be wow’d once or twice, or whatever, not sure if this wow’d me, but it has its moments and for that reason and the wow factor being there on her song with Pete Doherty I will dig a bit deeper in looking at this bit of music.

Coco and her band I Blame Coco is a cute name, but will cute cut it in the long run?  It didn’t work for many young female musicians or even male ones. Who knows, who cares, I don’t even think there has to be a long run, just today to be honest because the days of buying Albums is over.  People want singles, they want playlists, they want to fill their ipods brick by brick. Quality over quantity any day I say and so do the people as right now they are the new A&R. Danke shanke Coco, I think you are singing from the heart and that is what matters in my opinion.

She certainly has this thing going that reminds me of Milla Jovavich and her music career and not the model, sexy comic books made into film superstar actress.  Milla the uber-talented one is probably a step up from Coco from a virtuoso standpoint, but that is no slight, because Coco has her own style and originality always scores points with fans as does being the child of a famous parent. I don’t buy this Nico, sing and dance like a doll bullshit that the music media seems to try to spoon feed us these days. Screw that.

Coco could be a next Mary Lou Lord with a sore throat, which I am told Mary Lou does have more of these days from a debilitating illness, a vocal ailment and so she doesn’t get to busker (something Benjamin Franklin took a crack at in Philly) or play the Boston club seen as much as before, but I hear Coco is and has not been above busking (those folks that play on a street corner or at the subway hoping for a lil change).  If anything she reminds me the Rooney frontman, Robbie Carmine who is also Robert Schwartzman, who relies on family breeding and talent to make a mix, but it is still a tough sell to go from famous kid to famous adult sans the family groomed name.  The Mary Lou Lord comparison rather than the Rooney one is a comparison that Sumner should hold dear and try to affix herself to growing into as she matures as a woman and a musician.

The following is something related to her myspace page…guess you will have to see it to find out, but this video should help clue most of mystery and sly fox shenanigans aside.

So anyway back to Coco Summer, we got her with Natty and they sent this cryptic message to this Rudi character and the note that follow after this video above:

“…for more indieghetto:

Indie Ghetto Will Also Be Live At Latitude Festival July 17th 09″

So I don’t know what any of that means, but this video below is kinda hot in way you’d expect from…I don’t know I’m drawing blanks, but enjoy the track and link.  Like before more Milla Jovavich (Listen Here) than Nico, more Mary Lou rasta-folk than whatever the masses are doing to compare, for me there is none. Fuck comparisons, as Einstein said “the universe is an elegant design”.

Coco Sumner and Spank Rock

Coco Sumner and Spank Rock

She’s unique.

Many women are and those tend to be the ones who go happily ever after and that is why we are writing on her. She’s pretty, she’s young, she’s brunette, she’s dredlocked or what have you and has that blonde girl thing going on somewhere, but keeps it mostly away – but it’s there when she wants, one of daddy’s gift.

Regardless of what men say, we prefer blondes, at least at first, they sadly aren’t the best keepers, but maybe that is just me.

She can do her own thing and chances are she won’t be the kind of girl who is approaching 40 with a bucket full of pets, no love letters or diamond pendents or photos of a trip with the kids to the Grand Canyon or Disney World and all it’s supposed sell-out(itis) that it has. Someone with children to show for it, because really at some point Peter and Wendy leave never-never land.

I often wonder about the female rocker and when she decides to call it quits, focus on love with other people, husband, girlfriend, a person that isn’t a typeset “Georgia” or “Helvetica” – one that isn’t going to trade you in after 7 years, for the younger model because as the J. Crew catalogs show so well, men age like wine, women…insert your own deduction here. It has to be tricky to be loved by thousands if not millions and being the “one” competing with all that, possibly why so many stars have trouble lasting love.

That makes me sad.

I say this because you often hear it in the songs, as women grow and have children how their music evolves compared to those who do not, even Britney Spears for all her what have yous most likely will have at least two boys she can count on, love on, remember on and feel as if she gave the world the ultimate song, like Ziggy said “Life is love man.”  That is why I think below you will enjoy the songs, especially “Bohemian Love” as it relates to this by Coco and her band Blame it on Coco or I Blame Coco (band name) stance on things.  I say blame us all.

Here is a video I found of Coco, solo, pretty raw, not the greatest music per se, but like many artists, jamming in the middle of the night for a hand held Super 8 camera whose purpose isn’t about pretty or fancy productions in the Hollywood sense, it’s about real.  It’s real right?

A side-note to cute, wunderkind types of female musicians is Moe Tucker story that might help relate what I am getting at.  I remember meeting Moe Tucker (listen here) drummer from the Velvet Underground – that band Andy Warhol loved so much and we do too like so many.   So since we were talking of Nico who did her thing with the Velvet Underground, I figured why not catch up with Moe?  She was about 45 when I met and saw her play.  She supposedly lived on a farm South Georgia and had a son that she adored – as was evident before the show at some keg party gathering and during the show.

It seemed she still played music from time to time, but was a mom, a wife I don’t know the details of that, but really was beloved and loving both simultaneously as it was evident as she played her set, a very upbeat, fun fast VU rock type stuff in the front with the guitar and microphone all to herself sans Lou Reed and John Cale at the 40 Watt in Athens, GA.  She gave a shout out to her son and us, his friends not to drink too much, sadly boys have a hard time following mom’s advices.

And it wasn’t snide or snarky or whatever the term is for that jaded rocker, that the single white female kind who needs a fight club worse than men with bitch tits.  She wasn’t that type of persona, what she did it was meant from the heart with love for her son and his friends who she came to the keg party at prior to the concert – one of my special nights.

So this song below I feel is akin to Moe Tucker and I feel it’s sincerity:

“Bohemian Love”

It’s a combo with Pete Doherty and Coco Sumner on the vocals, you can see that being alone is not confined to aging women rockers, the boys get it too.  Boy do we ever, I would say worse than girls, but then I am biased and single and still a lil sore from the last breakup more so in that I didn’t get my “Bohemian Love” song.  So it does appears as rumors have it this song was written by Pete Doherty for Kate Moss and his missing her, in hopes, feeble or solid in hopes of getting her back.  I don’t follow the gossip that much, but I am sure somewhere like TMZ has the scoop.

You be the judge, does it make the grade or is it just a passing stunt?

As for this family, the Sting clan, I mean do all of them just exude sex, love and rock and roll better than anyone else?  I heard the son is quite the playboy too, not sure if he plays any faux instruments and just vibes, who knows.  Maybe we can ask Elvis Costello and why he hates Sting so much…wee-wee envy perhaps? Either way, get over yourself Elvis Costello, the hipster crowd or those who only drink micro-brews or those who resides mostly on the East side of Manhattan thinking it’s the world is your last bastion of followers.  Not since Annie Hall and some other bit par in indie films staring Steve Buscemi have you really been remotely relevant. Personally I find your music boring and self indulgent and that is being kind.

On to the tunes!
